Anne Arundel Appoints Severn Man To Council Seat

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Anne Arundel County Council has chosen a 31-year-old Severn man to fill a vacant seat on the council, ending weeks of deadlock.

The council voted Monday to appoint Marine reservist Peter I. Smith to the District 1 seat formerly held by Daryl D. Jones, who is serving a five-month federal prison term for failing to file his taxes.

Smith faced competition from 70-year-old former state Sen. Michael J. Wagner, a Ferndale business owner. Ten people had applied for the seat.

Council Chairman Derek Fink says Smith will be sworn in at the council's next meeting on April 2.
