Ring Factory Elementary Named Blue Ribbon School

BEL AIR, Md. (WJZ)—A Harford County school is recognized as being one of the best in the state.

Monique Griego has more on what it takes to be a Blue Ribbon School.

Ring Factory Elementary students certainly had something to celebrate.

"It's actually something that I've been wanting to see, being a part of the school," said Lois Fabiano, parent.

At an awards ceremony Friday, the elementary school was named one of Maryland's Blue Ribbon schools of 2012--thanks to its excellence in academics.

"This is good to know. Beyond what our parents know, we have recognition in the community and our school," said Karen McNeely, teacher.

Becoming a Blue Ribbon School means performing in the top 10 percent in math and reading. Ninety-eight percent of Ring Factory students are proficient in both areas.

Only six out of 1,700 schools in the state receive the award.

"It's the dedication of parents, students, the staff; the kids love coming to school every day," Fabiano said.

The interim state superintendent is traveling to all of the winning schools.  He thanked a specific group.

"It's always about the teachers--hardest job in America," said Dr. Bernard Sadusky, interim state superintendent.

"It feels good to finally be rewarded for what we do. Everyone wants to be a blue ribbon," McNeely said.

These proud parents also recognize that a Blue Ribbon award can go a long way in teaching their kids what they can achieve.

"You can be successful if you do hard work, and the teachers here have instilled that in our kids," Fabiano said.

The school was awarded $6,000 in new equipment, and the kids are getting a huge pizza party.
