Civil Trial Concerns Deputy's Shooting Of Md. Dog
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A civil trial is underway in Frederick to determine whether a Frederick County sheriff's deputy wrongfully shot a Taneytown couple's dog.
The Frederick News-Post reports that a six-member jury was chosen Monday to consider the complaint by Roger and Sandi Jenkins.
They claim deputies Timothy Brooks and Nathan Rector violated their constitutional right against illegal search and seizure in January 2010.
The deputies had gone to the house with a civil warrant for a juvenile. Brooks wounded the couple's chocolate Labrador retriever, Brandi, in what he claims was an appropriate response to aggressive behavior.
Roger Jenkins claims he was trying to bring the dog inside when she was shot.
The plaintiffs have rejected a $2,500 offer from the sheriff's office.
The trial is scheduled through April 3.
