Gov. O'Malley Endorses Garagiola For Congress

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- State Sen. Rob Garagiola is getting Gov. Martin O'Malley's endorsement.

The Democratic governor said Thursday that Garagiola's longtime support for progressive issues makes him the best choice among the five Democratic candidates in Tuesday's 6th Congressional District primary.

O'Malley said Thursday in Annapolis that the Montgomery County senator already been an extremely effective state senator.

O'Malley cites Garagiola's leadership on green job creation, renewable energy legislation, expanded health care coverage and Maryland's new same-sex marriage law.

Garagiola began the race as the presumed nominee but he's trailing in fundraising behind Democratic businessman John Delaney, also of Montgomery County.

Garagiola also has been endorsed by organized labor and other traditional Democratic allies.

The Democrats hope to win the congressional seat held by Republican Roscoe Bartlett. Redistricting has made the race competitive for the first time in 20 years.
