Baltimore Hopes Software Will Fetch More Jurors

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore is hoping that a new software system will help bring in more residents for jury duty.

The Baltimore Sun reports that the first batch of city residents summoned through the new system are set to appear in Circuit Court on Monday. The new system, called "Jury Plus, Next Generation," lets people who receive a summons in the mail reschedule their service online and also respond to required jury questionnaire.

Last year court officials sent quarter-million summonses to potential jurors. That list of potential jurors was created using driver's license and voting records. But only about 27 percent of people showed up. Officials say some people ignore the summons while a large number of other summons are returned as undeliverable.
