McDaniel College Gets An Unofficial Mascot Whose Mission Is To Help Others

WESTMINSTER, Md. (WJZ) -- Students at McDaniel College in Westminster have taken on a four-legged friend with the hopes of helping others.

Monique Griego has more on how you can help them raise Hudson.

He's the big man on the McDaniel College campus. And just like any undergrad, Hudson is here to kick off his career--as an assistance dog.

Gabi Branda is part of the "Puppy Club," an on-campus group that's raising the Labrador for the Canine Companions for Independence organization.

"When we receive the dog it's eight weeks old and we do a lot of basic training, things you teach your dog at home," said Linzie Bonds.

For 18 months, Hudson will live with the club members in student housing. On any given day he can be found roaming around campus. The goal is to get him socialized and ready for advanced training.

Hudson is so well known around campus people refer to him as the school's unofficial mascot.

"Everyone loves him. Everyone wants to pet him every time they see him," said Branda.

But taking care of Hudson isn't cheap.

"We have to cover all vet bills, food, professionally groomed," said Bonds.

So Wednesday, April 18, the group is holding a silent auction on campus to raise money. Despite the added responsibility, these "puppy-raisers" say the reward is worth it.

"He's going to go with someone who needs him and the fact that we got to raise him for 18 months is one of the greatest experiences we can have," said Branda.

Students and the community can donate items for the silent auction April 18.
