Baltimoreans Commemorate Good Friday
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- On Good Friday Christians observe one of the most solemn days of the year: remembering the day Jesus Christ died.
Gigi Barnett has more on the services in Baltimore.
It is one of the most holy days of the year for Christians in Baltimore and around the world as millions celebrate Good Friday.
"It means life everlasting," an observer explained.
Christians believe Jesus was crucified on Good Friday and resurrected on Easter.
At the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, parishioners marked the day with song, prayers and solemn readings.
"It should be a very lovely mass. It's a lovely place inside there," parishioner Thomas Hecht said.
But this year, the holy weekend clashed with Major League Baseball schedules. Nine teams, including the Orioles, started their season on Good Friday.
Cardinal Edwin O'Brien sent the team a letter asking them to switch Opening Day. Major League Baseball said 'no.'
"When it comes to Good Friday and Passover, you can't get any more sensitive than that as far as religious sensitivities are concerned," Cardinal Edwin O'Brien of the Archdiocese of Baltimore said.
Easter services this week actually began on Thursday. Christians worldwide say weekend is a chance to reflect on their faith.
"You live Easter everyday and it's the commemorative day to live it," Sallie Wolfe, a parishioner, said.
And celebrate it, too.
O'Brien says this weekend's services are special for him. That's because it's his last Easter in Baltimore. He recently received a new post from the Vatican.
