Solar-Powered Compactor In Downtown Annapolis

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Solar-powered compactors have been installed in downtown Annapolis.

The Capital of Annapolis newspaper reports that the Department of General Services installed the compactors last week at Lawyers Mall. The site is a popular place for political rallies, news conferences and tour groups.

The compactors take trash, cans and bottles and can hold more trash than ordinary trash cans. They were installed as part of a pilot program.

Sam Cook, who oversees the Annapolis state offices for the Department of General Services, says the compactors can be
monitored from his computer.

Cook says he would also like to install them behind the Treasury Building and at the Department of Natural Resources/Courts of Appeal complex.
