SALISBURY, Md. (AP) — The city of Salisbury is hoping to retain police officers by reducing the time it takes for them to move up in ranks.

The Daily Times of Salisbury reports that a measure has been tacked onto the mayor’s proposed fiscal year 2013 budget that would take one year off the time it takes for an officer to advance to the designation of police officer 1 and police officer first class.

Ireton says it takes longer for an officer in Salisbury to move up those ranks than it does in surrounding jurisdictions.

Police Chief Barbara Duncan says the department also offers other initiatives to retain officers, including a sign-on bonus to officers who transfer from other agencies.
