Memorial For Fallen Soldier Planned In Md. Park

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A friend of a slain U.S. Army captain is raising funds for a memorial to fallen service members in an Urbana park.

Jonathan Sanderson tells The Frederick News-Post that he has raised nearly $12,000 of the $30,000 needed for the tribute to Capt. John Ryan Dennison.

The 24-year-old Ijamsville resident was killed by small arms fire in Iraq in 2006.

Sanderson says he thinks of Dennison whenever he drives by the nearly completed Urbana District Park because Dennison loved playing outdoors. The park is set to open in June.

The county's parks department has given its blessing to the project.

Sanderson says that if all goes well, construction will begin next spring.
