BALTIMORE (AP) — The CEO of the Baltimore City public school system says employees would be forced to take furlough days if the state’s so-called “doomsday” budget goes into effect.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Andres Alonso spoke Tuesday as he prepared to present the fiscal year 2013 budget.

Lawmakers failed to pass an income tax package in the final hours of the annual 90-day session last month, triggering the cuts largely at the expense of education and public services.

Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley recently announced that he will convene a special legislative session May 14 to complete work on a budget that left the state with $512 million in cuts.

Alonso says the school system found that four furlough days would produce enough savings to keep school budgets from being touched.
