Miner Hurt At Western Md. Coal Mine

GRANTSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Federal regulators say a coal miner suffered a back injury in an accident at the Casselman Mine near the western Maryland town of Grantsville.

A U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration official tells the Cumberland Times-News that the accident
occurred Tuesday evening.

An agency spokeswoman says a scoop operator was not aware the man was working in front of the scoop bucket. When the machine moved, the miner was pinned between the bucket and the mine roof.

The agency says it is investigating the accident.

The miner was taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center in Cumberland where he was being treated for the back injury.

The mine is controlled by Corsa Coal Corp. of Toronto and operated by Maryland Energy Resources, based in Johnstown, Pa.
