WASHINGTON (AP) — A Maryland teenager has won $75,000 for coming up with a screening method for early-stage pancreatic cancer.
Jack Thomas Andraka of Crownsville, Md., won this year’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. The 15-year-old won for his work in the medicine and health sciences category.
The two runners-up won $50,000 each. They are Ari Misha Dyckovsky, an 18-year-old from Leesburg, Va., who did an analysis of quantum teleportation in the field of physics and astronomy, and Nicholas Benjamin Schiefer, a 17-year-old from Ontario, Canada, who did a study of microsearch, or searching the fastest growing information medium, including tweets and Facebook status updates, in the field of computer science.
The fair is a program of the Society for Science and the Public, a nonprofit organization promoting scientific research and education.
