Orioles Activate Chavez, Select Gonzalez

TORONTO (AP) -- The Baltimore Orioles activated outfielder Endy Chavez off the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and selected right-hander Miguel Gonzalez from Triple-A Norfolk.

Outfielder Xavier Avery and right-hander Tommy Hunter were optioned to Triple-A.

Chavez has not played since May 8 after straining muscle in his left side. The 11-year veteran is batting .133 with no homers and one RBI in 20 games.

Gonzalez, signed as a minor league free agent in February, was 2-1 with one save and a 1.50 ERA in 11 games at Triple-A, including three starts. Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Gonzalez will pitch out of the bullpen.

Hunter took the loss against Toronto on Monday, extending his winless streak to six starts. He's 2-3 with a 5.59 ERA in 10 starts and has allowed 13 home runs, tied for second in the AL.

Avery made his major league debut May 13 against Tampa Bay. A Double-A all-star in 2011, he hit .217 with no homers and four RBIs in 15 games with Baltimore.
