BALTIMORE (AP) — Scientists say the conditions that killed thousands of fish recently in Maryland waters may be improving slightly, but dead fish continue to surface.

The Baltimore Sun reports that a state water monitoring station in Masonville Cove has detected a slight improvement in dissolved oxygen since last week.

A Maryland Department of the Environment spokeswoman said an estimated 10,000 fish were found floating this week in Stoney Creek in northern Anne Arundel County and in its tributaries. Most were menhaden.

Last week authorities reported finding 100,000 dead fish in Marley Creek, amid a massive “mahogany tide” that’s been
suffocating fish in parts of the Chesapeake Bay.

Some relief may come from storms over the next few days in the Baltimore area. Wind, rain and cooler temperatures may help restore oxygen to the water.
