Jury Chosen For Frederick Murder Case
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A jury has been chosen in Frederick for the first-degree murder trial of a man charged with shooting his girlfriend.
The Frederick News-Post reports that seven men and five women were chosen Wednesday to decide the fate of Melvin Smith.
Smith, 28, is charged with fatally shooting Tranice Richardson, 33, July 8 outside her apartment. Smith was at large for nearly three weeks after the shooting. He was arrested in McKeesport, Pa., near Pittsburgh.
Court records show that Smith fathered at least one of Richardson's four children.
This is not the first time Smith has been charged in a homicide. He served five years for a manslaughter conviction stemming from a shooting in Frederick in 2000.
