ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — The daughter of Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer has disclosed she is a lesbian.
Stefany Hoyer Hemmer told the Washington Blade, a gay newspaper, that she is gay. She says she made the announcement in part to show her support for Maryland’s gay marriage law, which will likely be decided by voters in a November referendum.
Hemmer told The Baltimore Sun that it was important for her to go public with her sexual orientation because of her father’s visibility on a local and national level.
Hemmer, who is 43, lives in Talbot County on the Eastern Shore.
She says she has lived with a partner for the past 18 months. She also says that friends and family, including her father, have known she is gay.
