Morgan State Says It Is Thoroughly Probing Its Handling Of Suspected Cannibal

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- Cannibalism. The brutal crime involved former Morgan State University students and made international headlines. Now, top school leaders are speaking out.

After days of requests from WJZ, Morgan State's president is finally speaking about the tragedy involving former students that's raising questions over whether the school ignored warning signs.

Alexander Kinyua-- who at one time attended Morgan and whose father is a professor-- is accused of dismembering and eating the heart and brains of another former student, Kujoe Agyei-Kodie, in Harford County.

"Let me express on behalf of Morgan State University, my deepest condolences to the families who have been impacted by this unfortunate situation," David Wilson, president of the university, said.

Potential warning signs include a video from a student forum five months ago where Kinyua spoke of human sacrifice.

"I don't see it there but prevalent outside the university," he said on the video. "It's something that goes on outside the university. It's international-- blood sacrifices."

And according to published reports, a campus police report referred to him as "Virginia Tech waiting to happen."

"Safety and well-being of our campus community continues to be a priority for this university," Wilson said.

Kinyua is accused of beating another former student with a bat wrapped in chains and barbed wire six days before the cannibal victim went missing.

"On the advice of counsel, I cannot talk about the specifics of this case," Wilson said.

Morgan's president would not take any questions but a spokesman said the university is extensively reviewing how staff handled Kinyua.

"One thing: Morgan is not, in any form real or perceived, it is not a negligent bystander in the protection of our students and of our campus community," Wilson said.

Morgan State said it will continue to provide updates on its internal investigation. Kinyua remains in jail.

The victim was living with the suspect's family at the time he was murdered.
