State Trooper Struck By Truck In Washington County

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A Maryland State Police trooper was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries after being struck by a truck in Washington County.

Officials say the crash happened Thursday around 9:30 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 70 at Cedar Ridge Road. Officials say the officer had stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation and was speaking with the driver when a tractor trailer drifted into the right shoulder where the vehicle was stopped. The truck struck the officer's cruiser, which had its emergency lights on, as well as the officer.

The driver of the truck, identified as 70-year-old William John Riegel Jr. of New Paris, Pa., stopped. He was charged with negligent driving and violating the state's move-over law, which requires drivers to give stopped emergency vehicles an extra lane of space.
