Mother Drowns Trying To Save Toddler In Md.

PRESTON, Md. (AP) -- Authorities say a woman drowned in Caroline County on Father's Day after jumping into a creek to save her toddler.

Natural Resources Police Cpl. Barry Ball says the woman and her husband were packing up after fishing on Poplar Neck Bridge when the toddler fell into Marsh Creek in Preston on Sunday. The couple jumped in, and the husband got hold of his wife and child, but the current began pulling them away from the bridge.

Sgt. John Felts of the Salisbury Police Department, who was in the area, jumped in and got the toddler to shore. Officials say the father lost contact with his wife, who could not swim.

The Star Democrat reports that authorities later found the 22-year-old woman near the bridge.
