Authorities Render Fake Pipe Bomb Harmless

SHARPSBURG, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office Bomb Squad has rendered a fake pipe bomb harmless.

The device was found Thursday afternoon in Sharpsburg by a man mowing his lawn. The device-- two metal pipes taped together with the wiring and caps attached to make it look like a pipe bomb-- was about 8 inches long and three-quarters f an inch around.

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports that Senior Deputy State Fire Marshal Ed Ernst says officers used a
robot to pick up the device and render it harmless in a water charge. Ernst then donned body armor and checked to make sure the device was harmless.
