Acting Police Commissioner Wants Job Permanently

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The search is on for Baltimore's new police commissioner--and there is a top contender for the job.

Adam May reports he knows Baltimore very well.

"I have put in my resume," said Anthony Barksdale.

Baltimore's new acting police commissioner Anthony Barksdale announced Tuesday he wants the job full-time. He's supported by other top officers in the department.

"I've seen what happens when outsiders come in. No offense to anyone but this team here, we know each other," Barksdale said.

The humble 20-year veteran started as a street cop, worked his way up to colonel of organized crime and eventually deputy commissioner.

"When I got into this, I was 18 years old," Bealefeld said.

Outgoing Commissioner Fred Bealefeld leaves big shoes to fill. He's popular among citizens and successful at reducing crime. He hinted last month his replacement should be internal.

"I think we're doing great things here and I think there's some very competent people inside the police department," he said.

During Preakness, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced a national search.

"I'm looking forward to our search to provide Baltimore the next great commissioner to take us to the next level," Rawlings-Blake said.

"If it is meant to be, it will be. If I am not selected, I will continue to serve the mayor and this great city," Barksdale said. "Wish me luck."

Current Commissioner Bealefeld officially ends his role Aug. 1. A high-ranking law enforcement source says Barksdale is considered a leading candidate.

The mayor's office had no direct comment on Barksdale. They said they hope to end their search in the next few weeks.
