Aircraft Repair Firm Coming To Hagerstown

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Washington County officials say an international aircraft maintenance company will establish operations at the Hagerstown Regional Airport.

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reported Wednesday that Mecaer Aviation Group of Borgomanero, Italy, will open its shop Aug. 30. The company's U.S. headquarters are in Philadelphia.

Washington County Administrator Gregory Murray says Mecaer will maintain and repair helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

The Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a cash incentive of $20,000 a year for five years. In return, Mecaer must provide at least 18 full-time jobs with salaries averaging at least $50,000.

Local officials are working to make the airport a center of aerospace employment. The Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics runs an aviation maintenance school there, and Sierra Nevada Corp. outfits planes for surveillance work at the airport.
