Prince George's Co. Police Charge 12-Year-Old With Murder In 2-Year-Old's Death

FORT WASHINGTON, Md. (WJZ) -- Prince George's County Police charge a 12-year-old boy with second-degree murder in the death of a 2-year-old girl.

Kai Jackson has the latest on this shocking case.

It's a heartbreaking story. Police are just beginning their investigation. As they do, details of life inside the home are slowly being released.

It's a horrifying crime that happened Tuesday in Ft. Washington.

Police were called to the home of a toddler after the girl's foster father called 911 reporting that he discovered the child unresponsive. She was taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.

"An autopsy yesterday confirmed the child died from blunt force trauma," Julie Parker, spokesperson for the Prince George's County Police Department, said.

She's been identified as 2-year-old Aniya Batchelor and a 12-year-old boy living in the home has been charged with second-degree murder, accused of beating her to death.

"Detectives developed probable cause to charge the boy after conducting interviews with the family," Parker said.

Right now, the 12-year-old boy has been remanded to the Cheltenham Youth Facility in Prince George's County.

"Both children lived in the home in Ft. Washington. The 2- year-old was a foster child and the 12-year-old was a biological child of this family," Parker said.

Police say there has been discussion about whether or not to charge the boy as an adult. So far, that has not happened. His name is not being released because he is a minor.

Police say two other biological children live with the family. One is 15 years old and the other is nine.
