FEDERALSBURG, Md. (WJZ)– Rescue workers make a gruesome discovery in a Caroline County creek. Three boys are dead after drowning, and investigators are ruling it an accident.

Gigi Barnett reports.

Rescue workers in Federalsburg pulled three bodies out of the Marshyhope Creek on Sunday. Two 12-year-old boys and an 8-year-old boy drowned.

Neighbors say the day started like any other as the boys were last spotted playing basketball near a church on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s like a routine– go to the store, get something to drink, go play basketball. They know to come straight home,” Wideline Louis, a neighbor, said.

But one of the boy’s stepmother noticed her son — who came to the United States from Haiti in March– wasn’t at home when she returned from work late Saturday night.

“We looked everywhere and we called the police. And not until this morning they found out what happened,” she said.

Police are ruling the drowning an accident.

Neighbors say Marshyhope Creek is deceptively dangerous and something needs to change to prevent another drowning.

“It’s a tragedy, and they need to do something. They need to do something so that this doesn’t happen again,” said a neighbor.

The state Department of Natural Resources will take over the investigation into the drownings. Police say foul play was not a factor.
