BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Bumped from the top spot. U.S. News & World Report is out with its list of the top hospitals and Johns Hopkins falls from number one.

Jessica Kartalija reports it’s quite a change after spending more than two decades at the top.

A new state-of-the-art facility put Johns Hopkins Hospital in the spotlight as one of the top medical institutions in the country–but not the top, according to U.S. News & World Report.

“I must say, it’s a new day. We’re regrouping. We’re looking at things, finding out what happened,” said Gary Stephenson, Johns Hopkins Hospital.

After 21 years of being the number one hospital in the nation, the magazine released its list of top hospitals and Johns Hopkins dropped to number two.

“A minute change in how their methodology is done can flip a hospital from number one to number three. It’s often a single point that determines that ranking,” said Stephenson.

Massachusetts General claimed the top spot this year, though Hopkins is still ranked number one in five specialties: neurology and neurosurgery, rheumatology, ear, nose and throat, geriatrics and psychiatry.

“We are still very proud of our ranking. We really believe in the care we provide, we are excited about the new buildings that just opened and we fared very well in several different areas,” said project administrator Robin Hunt.

And as for next year, Hopkins officials say they’ll be back on top.

“You know what? You go on. You do what you do today, what you did the year before and the year before. It’s woven into our institutional DNA and that won’t change,” said Stephenson.

Rounding out the top five were the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and UCLA Medical Center.
