FREDERICK, Md. (AP) — The chief environmental officer for Fort Detrick says the Army has no plans to post signs warning of potential chemical contamination in surface water.

Groundwater samples taken from wells in the area this spring revealed the presence of chemicals used in cleaning supplies. The levels are higher than what’s accepted under federal drinking standards.

Robert Craig, Fort Detrick’s chief environmental officer, tells The News-Post of Frederick that the post has no plans at the moment to display warning signs that chemicals were found in Carroll Creek and the streams that feed it. But he says officials will discuss the idea with the Frederick County health officer.

Army officials and the contractor handling the remediation say the contamination isn’t a health concern, in part because people aren’t drinking the water.
