Md. Boy, Church Settle Big Splinter Injury Suit

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A Thurmont boy who was injured by a giant splinter on a big wooden slide has reached a $60,000 settlement with the Rocky Ridge church that owns the attraction.

Court records show that the settlement was approved Friday in Frederick County Circuit Court.

Lawyers for Christian Griffith and Mount Tabor Lutheran and United Church of Christ declined to comment on the deal.

Christian was 8 years old in August 2010 when he slid headfirst down the 40-foot slide and was pierced in the lower abdomen by an 8-to-12-inch splinter.

The complaint alleged that church officials should have known about dangerous splinters because of previous incidents in which people were hurt.

The boy's father Nolan Griffith filed the lawsuit on Christian's behalf in November. The original complaint sought $500,000 in damages.
