CBF: House Drought Aid At Expense Of Conservation

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Chesapeake Bay Foundation says drought relief aid passed by the House of Representatives comes at the expense of conservation programs.

Alison Prost, Maryland Executive Director of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, says the environmental group sympathizes with ranchers suffering from the drought. But Prost says the Senate should ensure Congress passes a farm bill that provides both drought relief and continued conservation funding.

Prost says the House vote threatens jobs in the seafood and tourism industries because resources will be diverted from programs to improve water quality.

And that will risk progress made restoring creeks, rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.
