Congressman Cummings Says DOJ To Tour Baltimore Jail

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings says the Justice Department will visit a Baltimore jail where the lawmaker has been calling for better oversight of juvenile detention.

Cummings says he sent a letter to the department last week asking about oversight at the Baltimore City Detention Center. Cummings says he was told that Justice officials will tour the jail Wednesday.

Following the letter, Justice officials said they had not visited the jail since 2010 despite an agreement to oversee reforms there. Youths held at the jail have complained about regular attacks among detainees.

The Maryland lawmaker says a 2007 oversight agreement expired without the jail meeting the terms of the agreement. Cummings says a new agreement reached in April allows Justice to continue reviewing youth conditions.
