Orioles Fans Hope Team Secures Wild Card Position

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- For the first time in 15 years, there's real hope the Orioles will make it to the playoffs.

Mary Bubala reports Baltimore is practically holding its breath as the team inches closer with each and every win.

As Baltimore's boys of summer surge towards the postseason, Oriole fans across Maryland are coming to grips with the fact that this could be the year after so many years of waiting.

"It's the best I have ever seen in 15 years of O's magic," said Justin Hayet.

"It's really exciting that they finally have a shot at the playoffs and could potentially be really good," said Dara Kramer.

"Go O's!" said Ryan Gerber.

Thirteen-year-old Ryan Gerber has lived his whole life until now without ever knowing what it's like to watch a winning team. Born just after the O's 1997 AL East title, Ryan and his brother are excited at the thought of seeing one with their own eyes.

"I hope they keep on winning," said Ryan Gerber. "Can't wait."

"I just think they'll go all the way," said Josh Gerber.

And for the first time in more than a decade, Orioles merchandise is still selling like crazy in late August.

"We can prominently display our Orioles merchandise in the front of the store still and people will definitely look at it. They come in and purchase things, as well. People are definitely excited about the Orioles," said Nathaniel Scroggins, manager of The Sports Shop.

The Orioles are currently right behind Tampa Bay, but are holding on to the second Wild Card spot.
