National Mall Seeks Volunteers Ahead Of Inauguration

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A nonprofit group that's working to restore the National Mall is seeking volunteers to help guide the park's millions of visitors.

The Trust for the National Mall is working to expand its volunteer corps from 35 participants to at least 100 volunteers by the end of the year. The group's volunteers focus on areas of the mall without monuments and memorials. Those areas aren't covered by National Park Service volunteers and personnel.

Caroline Cunningham, president of the group, says volunteers help visitors find their way to sites, provide educational tours and offer historical information about the park. She says they need 100 volunteers trained and in place in time for the presidential inauguration in January.

The program began last year under a grant from the Boeing Co.
