Nursing Home In Md. Closing After Losing Funding

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A Baltimore nursing home that was the first in the state to accept AIDS patients is closing after numerous fire hazards were found during a recent state inspection.

The Baltimore Sun reports the Harborside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is losing its Medicaid and Medicare funding and will close within the next month. Nearly 70 elderly patients and vulnerable adults will be displaced.

Ravenwood Healthcare Inc., the Baton Rouge, La.-based company that owns Harborside, filed for bankruptcy in April and put the site up for sale. Faced with the loss of funding and no buyers, the company said it decided to shut down the facility.

The building opened as a hotel in the 1960s and was once owned by soul singer James Brown.
