ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Annapolis police say they have started cracking down on false alarms from business or residential security systems.

Officers say residents could be fined for violating the False Alarm Ordinance. The Capital of Annapolis reports that although the ordinance was passed three years ago, police started the crackdown on Saturday.

There will be no fines for the first or second false alarms, but $100 will be assessed for the third and fourth false alarms within a year. For any false alarms after that, the fine will be $200.

Police are also asking residents and business owners to register their alarm systems at http://www.annapolis.gov/police.
