GREENBELT, Md. (WJZ)– A former employee of the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) had pleaded guilty to issuing driver’s licenses for payment.

The U.S. Department of Justice said that Michael Anthony Peters Jr., 29, of Riverdale worked at the MVA’s Largo branch and issued at least 40 driver’s licenses to people who did not pass the required tests between July to October of 2007.

According to court documents, Peters falsified MVA records to show that those people had passed the tests and took $300 for issuing each non-commercial driver’s license and $400 for commercial driver’s licenses. The DOJ said that most of the people who bribed Peters were illegal aliens.

“Michael Anthony Peters violated the public’s trust and risked endangering our community,” said Special Agent-in-Charge William Winter of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). “This type of fraud poses a serious security vulnerability and could put the security of our communities and even our country at risk.”

Peters faces a maximum of five years in prison followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine. He will have to pay $12,000 in restitution as past of his plea agreement.

His sentencing is scheduled for December 18 at 9 a.m.
