WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a former campaign aide to District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray has provided “substantial assistance” to investigators, and they won’t insist that he serve any jail time.

Prosecutors said in a memo filed Monday that they won’t oppose a sentence of probation for Howard Brooks. Brooks pleaded guilty in May to lying to the FBI about payments he and others made to another mayoral candidate during the 2010 campaign.

Sentencing guidelines called for Brooks to receive a sentence of up to six months. The guidelines won’t change if a judge grants prosecutors’ request, but prosecutors say they won’t oppose a sentence of supervised probation and 200 hours of community service.

Brooks is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 10.
