BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Morgan State University’s campus became a crime scene when a man was shot and wounded outside the Student Center. Police are still looking for the person who did it.

Kai Jackson spoke with students who are fearing the worst.

Understandably, many students have an uneasy feeling after the shooting, a feeling that may last until a suspect is caught.

Chaos on the campus of Morgan State University after gunfire erupted. Baltimore police say it happened around 4:30 p.m. on the first floor inside the university’s Student Center.

“It really blows my mind. I’m very surprised that this happened,” said freshman Kenya Edwards.

Sky Eye Chopper 13 was above the massive police response with video as paramedics rushed the lone shooting victim to the hospital.

One student recognized the victim.

“I think I actually seen him in the game room with me a couple of minutes before so I didn’t know him know him but I seen him before,” that student said.

The campus was immediately locked down as a precaution. The Baltimore City Police tactical team moved in, uncertain if the suspect was still on campus.

University officials say neither the victim nor the suspect is a student.

Police say the victim was shot in the upper body and taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Investigators didn’t say how the shooting happened and they didn’t offer a motive.

“The information—again, that we have at this point—would lead us to believe that this was a targeted shooting and that, again, that they knew each other and so this was not random by any means,” said Morgan State University spokesman Clint Coleman.

Immediately after the shooting happened, a campus-wide alert went out to students and staff, notifying them of the incident and telling them what to do.

The campus was locked down and classes were canceled for the remainder of the day. The lockdown was lifted at 6:15 p.m.

Police say detectives are working the case and looking for a suspect.

“They’re trying to figure out one, what the relationship of this suspect and victim was. Two, they’re just trying to get any information that can point to the suspect,” said Detective Donny Moses.

Morgan State officials say classes will resume Thursday.
