Poultry Pollution Case Heats Up

BERLIN, Md. (AP) — The two sides in a Maryland poultry pollution law suit are now battling over whether a federal judge should visit an Eastern Shore farm at the center of the dispute.

Attorneys for Berlin farm owners Alan and Kristin Hudson and Perdue Farms Inc. filed a motion for the visit. The attorneys say that will help the court weigh evidence in the case. Attorneys for The Waterkeeper Alliance, an environmental group suing the farm and poultry company, are opposing the motion. They say a visit is unnecessary because photos, testimony and other evidence will be presented in court.

The plaintiffs claim that Salisbury-based Perdue and the Worcester County contract grower are polluting a nearby waterway.

The case is scheduled to go to trial Oct. 9.
