1 In 4 Impoverished In Baltimore, Census Finds

BALTIMORE (AP) — New census figures show one in four Baltimore residents living in poverty.

The 2011 figures released Thursday reveal no change from the year before. The city’s poverty rate increased 4 percent between 2009 and 2010. The figures also show more than 37 percent of children in Baltimore were impoverished in 2011, unchanged from the year before, but up from 28 percent in 2007.

Among large metropolitan areas, McAllen, Texas, led the nation in poverty, at 38 percent. The Washington, D.C., metro area had the lowest level of poverty, about 8 percent.

The federal poverty threshold is slightly more than $11,000 a year for an individual and about $23,000 a year for a family of four.
