Man Pleads Guilty To Attacking Mother With Hammer

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A 34-year-old man pleaded guilty to repeatedly striking his mother in the head with a hammer because he was afraid she would tell police he had misused her credit card.

The Capital of Annapolis reports that Robert Benscoter pleaded guilty on Thursday to attempted second-degree murder. He faces up to 12 years in prison at sentencing Dec. 18.

Prosecutors say on March 20, Benscoter hit his 61-year-old mother several times with a hammer. She was able to escape to a neighbor's house and call police.

She suffered a fractured skull.
