Frederick Official: Put School Kids On Transit

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A Frederick County commissioner is suggesting that some rural children take public transit to school to reduce the cost of running school buses.

Republican Billy Shreve told The Frederick News-Post Tuesday that he would have no reservations about children riding with adults on the county's TransIt Services buses. Shreve says that if those buses aren't safe for children, then the transit system has a problem.

The county school superintendent says school officials will consider the idea.

But a TransIt Services official says driving children to schools outside the current route system could conflict with the agency's mission of getting people to areas where businesses, stores, doctors and services are concentrated.
