Man Who Collected Disability Benefits Convicted

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A man who prosecutors say collected Social Security disability benefits while working for the agency has been convicted of fraud.

Christopher George Perry, 50, of Baltimore was convicted Thursday of Social Security disability fraud, federal health benefit program fraud and health care fraud. He faces up to 20 years in prison at sentencing Jan. 3.

According to evidence presented at trial, Perry began receiving Social Security long-term disability benefits in 1996. He also received Medicare benefits as a result of his disability and a low-income subsidy for prescription drugs.

Prosecutors say Perry went back to work in 1996 and in 2007, got a job as benefits authorizer with SSA, where he worked on cases pertaining to long-term disability benefits.

Prosecutors say Perry was overpaid more than $150,000 in benefits.
