WASHINGTON (AP) — Looking back in archived police logs, it turns out District of Columbia police once arrested the president of the United States for speeding through the city.

WTOP Radio reports President Ulysses S. Grant liked to drive himself around the city. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says he once was racing his buggy on M Street in Georgetown and was taken into custody. They even seized his horse and buggy.

The story is part of the Metropolitan Police Department’s 150-year history.

It wasn’t Grant’s first offense. Lanier says Grant had been stopped and cited three times for speeding.

But after police took the president to the police station, they weren’t sure they could charge a sitting president. So they let him pay a fine and walk back to the White House.
