Baltimore Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore police are investigating an officer-involved shooting.

Meghan McCorkell has the latest.

It occurred Tuesday evening in the 3000-block of Spaulding Avenue, right around the corner from Pimlico Race Track.

Homicide detectives are investigating and say officers were in the area patrolling along Park Heights Avenue when they heard gunshots. They went toward the sound of the gunshots. When they asked a man questions about what had happened, that man pulled a gun and began firing.

"The individual, almost immediately as soon as officers encountered him, fired at police. They returned fire. He was struck, not fatally," said Anthony Guglielmi, Baltimore City Police spokesperson.

The officers in the area are part of a special unit that deal with illegal gun offenders and drugs. It's not known how many officers fired on the suspect. A gun was recovered from the scene.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital. He is in serious but stable condition.

No officers were injured in the altercation.
