Worcester County Orders Evacuation Of Waterfront Homes

SNOW HILL, Md. (AP) -- Worcester County is ordering people to evacuate waterfront property.

The order Sunday covers West Ocean City and the communities of Cape Isle of Wight, Mystic Harbour, Snug Harbor, The Landings and Assateague Point. South Point is also included, as is anything east of the parkway in Ocean Pines.

Forecasts call for up to 10 inches of rain with a prolonged period of sustained winds between 40 to 45 mph and gusts of 60 mph. The county emergency services department warns there will be "historic flooding, including water in homes, regardless of where Hurricane Sandy makes landfall."

County shelters opened at 1 p.m. Sunday at Stephen Decatur High, Snow Hill High and Pocomoke High. There are pet-friendly shelters at Stephen Decatur Middle, Animal Control in Snow Hill and Pocomoke High.
