BALTIMORE (WJZ) – Your refrigerator is the biggest user of energy in your home.

Mary Bubala reports that if the seal isn’t airtight, you’re wasting energy and money because your refrigerator is the biggest user of energy in your home.

Test the seals by closing the door over a piece of paper or a dollar bill, so it’s right in the middle. If you can pull the paper or bill out easily, the seal needs to be replaced.

you may not have to replace the gasket. first clean it with rubbing alcohol and an hour later try the dollar bill again. you may find it will not come out. dust and dirt can put a film on your gasket causing it not to seal properly. cleaning it first can also save you money. cleaning should be done every 6 mths to ensure long life of your gaskets. this is also true on dishwashers and over doors.
