District Heights Police Officer Charged In Shooting Of Suspect

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- A District Heights police officer has been indicted on an attempted murder charge after authorities say he shot a handcuffed suspect in the back.

Prince George's County prosecutors say Sgt. Johnnie Riley turned himself in Thursday afternoon to face charges including attempted murder and assault.

He faces a bond review hearing Friday morning.

Riley is accused of shooting Kalvin Kyle in September after a traffic stop. Authorities say Riley pulled Kyle over on suspicion of riding a stolen motorcycle and put him in the back of a police cruiser as he secured the scene. As Kyle took off running, Riley allegedly shot him in the back. Kyle survived but was injured.

Riley's lawyer, C.T. Wilson, said he was still gathering facts and declined to discuss specifics of the case.
