Md. Cop Appears In Court On Attempted Murder Charges

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- A Maryland police officer charged with shooting and wounding a handcuffed man is due in court on an attempted murder charge.

Johnnie Riley, a District Heights police sergeant, was indicted Thursday in the shooting last month of a man in police custody.

Riley faces a bond review hearing Friday in Prince George's County.

Prosecutors say Riley shot a handcuffed man who got out of the police cruiser and began to run away. Riley had earlier pulled over the man, identified as Kalvin Kyle, on suspicion of operating a stolen motorcycle. Riley put him in the back of the police cruiser while he secured the scene and then, prosecutors say, shot Kyle in the back as he tried to run away.

Riley's lawyer says he's still gathering facts about what happened.
