Flood Spills Wastewater Into Potomac River

SNOW HILL, Md. (AP) — The town of Snow Hill says about 2.4 million gallons of wastewater was released into the Pocomoke River due to flooding from Superstorm Sandy.

The Daily Times reports the town announced the spillage Friday. It happened on Monday due to high water from the storm.

Water service Superintendent Frank Daniels says most of the spillage was river water and not raw sewage. He says he doesn’t expect it to have an environmental impact because the wastewater was diluted and partially treated through two filtering systems before the overflow.

Still, the public is being warned to avoid contact with the river water for at least 10 days and to avoid fishing in the river.

Mayor Charlie Dorman credits Daniels with limiting damage by shutting the plant down during the flood.
