D.C. Proposes Closing 20 Schools

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The District of Columbia has submitted a plan to close 20 schools and send students from those schools to other campuses.

The school system released its list of proposed closures Tuesday. Under the plan, five schools would close in both Ward 5 and Ward 7, and four schools would close in Ward 8. No schools would close in Ward 1 or Ward 3.

Eight of the proposed schools to be closed are elementary schools and four are middle schools. Spingarn High School also is slated to close. The other schools include three special education campuses. Most of the closings would go into effect for the 2013-2014 school year.

The school system says closing the schools will better utilize facilities. Average school enrollment will increase from 376 students to 432 students.
